Ride With Lance (2008)

On June 14, 2008, CRA President Ed Roberts was one of 40 cyclists to participate in the Ride With Lance event, held in Waterloo Region.  The event was organized to raise funds and awareness for the Odette Cancer Centre at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre and the Grand River Regional Cancer Centre.  In order to ride with the seven-time Tour de France winner, Lance Armstrong, each participant had to raise a minimum of $25,000 as well as the $1,500 entry fee.

Ed was one of only about one-third of the participants who completed the entire 125-km route, averaging approximately 32 km/hr (20 mi/hr). 

The event was a great success as it raised over $1.3 million for cancer treatment and research.  Ed was the third highest fundraiser, raising approximately $64,500, which was well over the $50,000 goal that he had set for himself.  By finishing in the top 5, he sat at Lance's table during the dinner, which gave Ed the opportunity to chat with Lance and have his photo taken with Kate Hudson, who also attended the dinner.
