Brownfield Redevelopment

CRA has been very active in the field of brownfield redevelopment since before the term "brownfield" was defined.  The Love Canal project in Niagara Falls, New York, in the late 1970s is often referred to as the catalyst for the evolution of what has become today's brownfield programs.  CRA was and remains the environmental consultant on that project.  CRA has been involved in the responsive and cost-effective remediation of hundreds of under-utilized industrial and/ or commercial properties across North America and England.  A beneficial end-use has very often been an important element in the development of an effective remedial solution.  Examples include turning a huge automotive manufacturing complex into an industrial business park in Detroit, a chemical manufacturing plant in Indiana into a shopping mall, and an aluminum foundry in Toronto into a "big box" store.

CRA's brownfield-related services include:

  • Phase I and Phase II environmental site assessments
  • Building decommissioning and (assessment, design, implementation)
  • Comprehensive risk assessments
  • Baseline environmental assessments
  • Remedial action plans (development, approval, implementation)
  • Remedial construction and operations maintenance
  • "Due care" plans and compliance documentation
  • New use design
  • Community relations/public consultation
  • Prospective purchaser agreement assistance
